OUR YEAR IN REVIEW
What will we know this year? Students, you will be able to write and research a topic on your own after reviewing and critiquing several speeches. You will be debating various topics including censorship. Students will develop reasoning and interpretive skills &recognize elements of persuasion in a speech. Lessons for November/December: Depth and Complexity study of Hansel & Gretel. STEAM activity- Build Gingerbread house that can withstand an earthquake. Intro to Mock Trial (State of Utah vs. Grinch case 90-001, the Grinch is accused of “theft by deception”- Utah criminal code 76-6-405 (1) A person commits theft if he obtains or exercises control over property of another by deception and with a purpose to deprive him thereof. Lessons for January/February: 1. Continue work on Sandra’s Depth and Complexity skills using Grimm Fairytales. Mock Trial/lesson on trial process. Mock Trial- Hansel and Gretel/lesson on using criminal statutes and constructing a case. Writing the Action and opening statement by the defense attorney. 6. Writing witness examination and cross-examinations. 7. Writing closing statements. 8. How to instruct jury/Jury deliberations 9. Reflection and conversations about Mock Trial. Prepare for transition to Debate, Lincoln’s 10 Sentences. Lessons for March/April: 1. Characteristics of an Issue-Editor of Newspaper: Censorship (Aff. vs. Neg) 2. Spider Legs- Peer Editing 3. Final Draft on Censorship 4. The Pied Piper of Hamelin 5. Depth and Complexity Fairy Tales. 1. 4 square/Hamburger Method of Persuasive writing 2. Elements of Reasoning (Deer in the Azaleas) 3. Editor of Newspaper: Censorship (Aff. vs. Neg) 4. Spider Legs- Peer Editing 5. Final Draft on Censorship The finished draft needs: 5 paragraphs, hamburger format. Paragraph 1- Intro to censorship, your viewpoint included. Paragraph 2-Reason #1-Why censorship is bad/good with at least one example or cited evidence to back up your reasons. Paragraph 3- Reason #2-Why censorship is good/bad with at least one example or cited evidence to back up your reason. Paragraph 4-Reason #3- Why censorship is good/bad with at least one example or cited evidence to back up your reasons ***PLUS***provide the counter argument to this. (One could argue that...). Point out the weakness to that counter argument. Paragraph 5- Conclusion should be a rewording of the introduction with a strong finish. Lessons for May: Washington's Letter to Martha (J. L.) The Am.
