Welcome back for our last week! I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! For our last assignment, instead of Thinkersize, I'd appreciate your response to these 4 questions. Please send me your answers in an email.
Thank you! What was your least favorite activity in NELP this year? What would you like to see more of in NELP next year? Or, if you are in 6th grade, What could I do differently next year to make NELP fun and educational for next years 6th graders? Tell me one thing you want me to know or wish I knew about you in NELP. Parents: How often do you want communication from me? How do you prefer communication: email, phone call, text, etc. What is your favorite thing about NELP? What are your frustrations or least favorite thing about NELP? On a scale of 1-10, how was the level of curriculum rigor geared toward the gifted learner? (1 being it had nothing to do with gifted learners and 10 being it was excellent at focusing on gifted students) Thank you! HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!!!!!!

Have you ever seen a baby turtle? I once got to swim with sea turtles in Hawaii. I'll never forget it... and I'll never forget the day my Jr. High teacher, Mr. Child, showed us a video of hatchlings (baby turtles) making their way to the ocean. I researched baby turtles that entire year!
Life is all about continuing to learn new things. Still, I was amazed to find out just this year, that a turtles' gender is dictated by the temperature! Did you know that? Females are created in warmer temps, boys in cooler temps. With global warming on the rise, you can imagine that there will be an increase in females and fewer males. Eventually, if this trend continues, there will be no more male turtles... which means no more turtles. What do you think are the implications of this? Can you imagine a world without turtles? I can't. If sea turtles interest you, you may enjoy our optional activity on sea turtles or this weeks challenge on sea turtle conservation. You can find the sea turtle assignment on Canvas. Or, you can continue with Thinkersize#18. Either way, I hope you have a wonderful week and enjoy creative learning! Joke for the week: How does a turtle communicate? Answer: A shellphone! Assignment for the week: Puzzle 18 OR using canvas, complete the turtle data assignment. An interesting fact about sea turtles... not only do they use a natural phenomenon to hatch at about the exact same time, but they can also live for 100 years and lay 100 eggs at a time! Sea turtles are amazing! Bennion:

This weeks challenge, if you choose to do it to be entered into the drawing, is to create a list of 10 ways you can help sea turtles and enact one of those ways into action this week. Email me your list and what one thing you are doing to save the sea turtles. For example, my goal is to never use or buy any plastic. Over the past 3 months I have tried to use only recyclable grocery bags, carry a metal reusable straw in my purse, and buy in bulk, brining my own glass or fabric bottles to reuse at the store to hold food. I've also had to re-think where I shop as most stores do not have this option. There are a million things you can do to help sea turtles. What will you do? Answer: Walking... JK Rolling! Last week the challenge was to play a game. This week the challenge is to decode this message: OLLP ULI HKIRMT VEVIBDSVIV 1. You have to first figure out how I encoded the message. You can try to see what works or do the technique where you figure out what letters occur the most. Example: The most frequently used letter in the alphabet is "e" followed by "r". Count to find the letter that appears the most and see if you can substitute it for "e" or "r". Write the alphabet on two pieces of paper in alphabetical order. Try shifting the letters to the right or left 1,2, or 3 times to see if you can find the code. *Remember the secret code message from the Great Chocolate Caper? The code will not be random, there will be a rule. 2. Make a cipher (decoder) for it. 3. Decode it and email me your answer! Then, for added fun, invent your own decoder- using letters, numbers, or symbols! Below (highlight and copy/paste or click on the tab) is a website for what and how to do this. https://www.melissaanddoug.com/blogpost?postId=6-secret-codes-for-kids We are moving to Canvas next week!
